The Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Sciences (IPAPS) is an interdisciplinary research unit that brings together members of the
departments of physics, chemistry, engineering, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography to perform cutting-edge research. The Institute's
prime research focus is concerned with the science of complex materials and fluids.
Specific subjects of research include superconductivity, ferromagnetism, semiconductor heterostructures, spintronics, nanotechnology,
solid surfaces, plasma physics, hydromagnetics, turbulence, fluid mechanics, laser physics, quantum computing,
and numerical analysis.
The Center for Interface and Materials Science (CIMS) is a recharge facility
within the Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Sciences. CIMS consists of three equipment stations that allow for exact
measurements of magnetic moments, diffraction analysis, and precise cuts of metals and metallic samples. The CIMS Recharge Facility
supports faculty and research staff from the departments of Physics, Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences, Chemistry and
Biochemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography as well as other campuses throughout
California.
