Spectroscopic study of novel electronic materials

We use infrared spectroscopy to investigate the electronic properties of exotic conductors and superconductors. Their anomalous properties challenge the foundations of the theory of metals. The latitude of applications of infrared spectroscopy spans from astrophysics to pharmaceutical industry. The reason behind such an unprecedented scope is that many fundamental properties of matter have characteristic energy scales falling in the infrared range. Some of these properties are already well understood and therefore infrared could be used for a routine characterization. However, other effects such as the energy gap in unconventional superconductors including high-Tc cuprates and heavy fermions or charge dynamics in the systems at the verge of the boundary of the metal-insulator transition are on the leading edge of the basic research. These latter problems are in the focus of our program. Together with Brookhaven National Laboratory, we also work on the development of the experimental techniques that will open new horizons for infrared methods in condensed matter physics through the use of synchrotron light sources.
